Esther Loopstra Art & Illustration

Tell us your bold boss story!:

I went to school for illustration and began my career by interning at Target headquarters, illustrating my first published children's book, and illustrating for local magazines while still in school. I've always loved hand lettering, patterns, travel and drawing! Since then my work has been used for print ads, editorials, books, stationery products, & textiles.

I also have a passion for teaching. Helping others find and express the creativity that resides inside of them is at the core of what brings me joy. I began teaching when I left my first job out of school and fell in love with it. I teach workshops and speak about creativity at events and online and I have been teaching college illustration and design courses for 8 years. Currently I am an instructor at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle.

We're all about bold boss moments, tell us about one of yours!:

  • Getting my first job out of college - I was hired for my dream job...creating fun patterns and illustrations for Target products

  • Getting some of my first freelance illustration jobs - getting paid to do what I love for large companies like Frito Lay and the Denver Post...what a dream!

  • Teaching my first class and beginning other workshops - I realized that teaching is a natural gift of mine! I love it and I'm damn good at it!

  • Discovering my Creative Voice through intuitive painting - I started going down the rabbit hole of how to teach the creative process

  • Creating packaging for Seattle Chocolates - a terrific company to have a relationship with... woman owned and local!

What advice or words of encouragement do you have for the #GoingBold community?:

I love to encourage everyone to follow their curiosity and find their own unique Creative Voice! I believe everyone has a unique way that they can share their creativity with the world and that we can get in touch with our intuition which is very powerful!
