Bold & Pop :: #BoldBossTribe Feature with Catherine Hildner Founder of Kitty Meow: A Creative Boutique

Hello! My name is Catherine and I’m a designer of beautiful paper goods with my biz, Kitty Meow: A Creative Boutique. I’m about to launch a total rehaul of my brand where you can shop stationery based on your mood. Feeling a little witty and saucy? I got you! Looking for sweet sentiments instead? I got you too, girlfriend.

When I graduated from college with a degree in graphic design I packed up my Honda Accord and moved from Illinois to Las Vegas. I didn’t have a job but my cousin lived there and thought it would be dream job city. I worked for a bunch of years in advertising for some of Las Vegas’ hottest nightclubs and hotels. While it was a fun job in my early 20s it soon became taxing on my soul.

I started to build up my invitation business on the side and that consisted of a few lonely designs in a little Etsy shop. I hustled really hard and after about a year took the plunge to quit my 9-5. It was so freeing but scary and lonely at the same time. My husband’s, then boyfriend, job moved us out of Las Vegas to Phoenix. In the 3.5 years we’ve been married we’ve gone from Las Vegas, Phoenix, LA, and currently Seattle.

All those moves and 2 baby girls later we are looking to settle back in the Midwest really soon. It’s been really challenging to juggle new cities and babies, but I am so grateful to be able to take my business with me wherever we go. It’s a piece of me and I’m damn proud to work hard for something I can call my own.

We're all about bold boss moments, tell us about one of yours!:

Bold boss moments? Oh wow! I feel like I’ve been living in a constant of bold boss moments in the past few months. After the birth of my second babe in under two years I told myself it was time to make it big or take a step back from my business completely. I felt like I was being a bad mom and bad business owner. My husband decided to take severance from a job after 14 years because they wanted us to move AGAIN and we finally said no go. I wanted to use this gift from God of him being home with our girls to really see if I can make it happen for my beloved Kitty Meow Boutique.

I took the plunge and hired the business coach I’ve been dreaming about, Bonnie from B is for Bonnie Design. I pulled the plug and made the investment on an awesome new website with Rachel from Intentionally Designed. After attending TradeShow Bootcamp I’m looking to launch into wholesale and made the investment in custom product photography from Bethanne Arthur Photography. I’ve been designing up so many new invitations and greeting cards, making connections with other creatives, doing collaborations, planning effective copywriting, and so much more. I’m even taking new head shots with Danielle Motif Photography to replace the before kiddos pics I’m currently using. My new website even has an education page that highlights my passion to share my smarts with other creatives and be a speaker at Creative events.

For once I’m being strategic about all my planning and not flying by the seat of my pants. I should have done all of these things “the right way” years ago, but live and learn I guess! The fancy new Kitty Meow website launches on June 6th and I’m so proud to show the world a piece of who I truly am! I’m done being afraid or thinking people might not care. I care! And I’m ready to put it out there. I hope you'll celebrate with me and check it out!!

What advice or words of encouragement do you have for the Bold Boss Tribe?:

Just go for it! It’s scary but you don’t have to go it alone. Find your people and lift each other up. Life is too short to not do the things that get you fired up. What gets you fired up might not fire up everyone but that’s absolutely ok! Your audience is out there. For real! Go find them right now.

I run Create Coaching & Consulting where I help women build purpose-driven businesses based on their goals, strengths, and talents. I have a passion for helping others create work and lives that are meaningful and fulfilling. My inspiration was sparked in my own journey to finding my true career path. After many years of climbing the corporate ladder, I ended up exhausted and unsatisfied, and I realized it wasn't for me. I began a journey of soul-searching and reconnection to myself during which time I decided to sign up for coach training. Eventually, I was able to combine my skills and passions, honor my dream of working for myself, and focus on an area I loved: Helping others grow and step into their power. My journey took a great deal of self-awareness, patience, perseverance, and trust, but I would do it again in a heartbeat. I love what I do and feel so privileged to help other women create work that fulfills them and has a positive effect on the world. I am super inspired by other women business owners and find that this community as a whole is so supportive, resourceful, and full of connection.

Owning my expertise has been a real boss moment (or journey, rather!) for me. I always struggled to combine my passions and interest and skills and once I did, it wasn't enough to do the work -- I needed to step up to the plate and play bigger. That required me to own my own expertise and put myself out there. Confidence comes with practice and I think it's a skill anyone can learn and improve. (And a necessary skill for business!)

What advice or words of encouragement do you have for the Bold Boss Tribe?:

One piece of advice that might be surprising to hear from a coach, is that YOU are the ultimate resource on your business (and your life, for that matter). When you learn to listen your intuition and rely on your own sense of knowing, that is where the real magic comes in. The best support you can receive in your business will be from those who allow you to lead from your intuition and brilliance, while providing the necessary skills, resources, and tools that help you accomplish your goals. And, mindset is everything. When you learn to master your mind, you have done 90% of the work :)

Tell us your bold boss story!:

STUCK! I know so many entrepreneurs that can relate to this feeling. I remember being pissed off that I felt my family was constantly pinched for cash. It felt like everything we earned went right back out to bills. Finances alone can be corrected... it wasn't just that that was causing this feeling of being STUCK. I felt like I was letting myself down. As odd or even crazy as it may sound, since high school, I have felt like I was meant for something big in life. Looking back at this moment of complete desperation I feel like I had been on a near 5 year hiatus on living to my passions while I learned to be a mom (something I am very passionate about as well). I felt like I wasn't living to the best version of myself because of it.

Desperation often creates inspiration. It absolutely did in my case. I decided that there are too many opportunities to make money in the world to be sitting around angry about the financial situation my family was in and I was just ready to commit to something to change things. I started with network marketing and being surrounded by so many positive people believing that you can achieve any goal inspired me to reach for more.

June 2017, Bold Brilliance Coaching was born. I took my love of leadership and success habits and combined it with my love for marketing and PR to help entrepreneurs to become the leaders' their employees and clients would want to follow while growing their opportunities to generate revenue. I have a degree in Communications focused on Public Relations combined with 3 years of management experience that has given me a passion and confidence to work with entrepreneurs as a business coach.

I work with those seeking to redefine traditional business and life standards. Those who knew the 9-5 just wasn't going to cut it! Those who make the world their office and set their own hours. I work with a stubborn bunch that REFUSES to accept failure! They try, they try again, they try until it works. They leave themselves no choice but to make it work. It is in their failures that they are learning their next steps.

They are striving for a bigger vision. They live for a WHY so big that it has turned them UNSTOPPABLE! They work hard and show up every day for a passion that is all their own. They believe in a dream and life that they create and is truly by their own design.

They define exactly what success looks like. Providing immeasurable value to people's lives in a way that the big corporations will never achieve! They are the doers, the go-getters, high achievers, and outside-of-the-box thinkers. They are the creators of a new normal.

They are the early risers and late-night coffee drinkers, raising one final cup to one another as they power through their tasks. Nothing can stop them. They are showing the 9-5 who's BOSS! These rebel bosses inspire me to help them achieve their dreams, become leaders that others are excited to follow, and create a business their life deserves.

We're all about bold boss moments, tell us about one of yours!:

The absolute best, most inspirational moments for me are seeing my clients succeed. Receiving the call, text, or email that they are running a business that has them excited to wake up every day, fuels me. I get to be something that I never thought would be so overwhelmingly satisfying- a silent cheerleader. Helping my clients go from constant transitional business situations to a thriving atmosphere from our working together, there is no better feeling.

What advice or words of encouragement do you have for the Bold Boss Tribe?:

Listen more than you speak and seek to understand. 80% of being in business, no matter the business, is your ability to listen to your employees and clients and understand their needs. If you can understand what your people need, you will always be able to find a way to succeed.
