Something we constantly hear (and are extremely proud of!) is how much people love our Instagram feed. We’ve been able to create a cohesive feed that really reflects our brand and our own personalities which translates to a highly engaged audience. Yay! However, we’ve recently realized that we’ve been able to do this more easily than most because of our social media backgrounds and experience. So today, we’re bringing that knowledge right to you with some of our top tips on how to create a brand personality on Instagram!

Define your Style

First things first, how have you defined your brand? Do you use specific colors, tones, or moods? What’s the tone of voice you use in your other marketing? Not only do you have to keep your Instagram feed consistent but your entire brand should be cohesive across social media platforms, your website, and other marketing materials.

If you’ve visited our Instagram account, you notice we use a lot of color because that’s what Bold & Pop is alllll about! We write our captions in a playful way that is natural to us and consistent with the rest of our marketing efforts. And most importantly, we give you a peek into our brand. This is actually who we are as people. We love color. We love donuts. And we actually say things like ‘bomb digs’ all the time. This has made it virtually second nature to us but once you get down your style, you will NAIL it!

Taking and Editing Photos

Now that you have your brand style down, it’s time to talk pictures! One of the best investments you can make for your Instagram pictures is having a handful (or closet full if you’re like us…) of props that reflect your brand’s style! If you have a product based company, find complimentary props that help highlight your products and its various uses. If you have a service based company, you’ll want to find props to exemplify your brand. For example, we use a lot of office props: File folders, notebooks, paper clips. We even use our laptops and phones as props! Just make sure your props stay in your brand’s color palette, vibe, and style you already set! (Not sure where to find props? We got you covered!

Once you have your props all set, we recommend taking a TON of photos. Arrange your props in numerous ways. Use different backgrounds (keep it within your style though!). Anything you can think of take a picture. That way you’ll have plenty of images to choose from and use for weeks or even months to come!

Pro tip: We love to use natural light when shooting. Lighting is seriously important for crisp, clear images. Set up by a window or even shoot outside if you can (overcast days are actually best to avoid harsh shadows). However, the most important thing to remember when taking and editing your images is to keep it consistent! If you use a filter, always use the same or a similar filter. If you are more moody, keep each image moody. Consistency is key for cohesion! 

Planning your Content

And now we put it alllll together! We like to plan out our content a week in advance so we can see what our feed will visually look like and the topics we’ll be posting about for the week. We actually write out each post and choose an image to go with it. This way you can make sure you have a good visual flow for your feed.

And don't forget to get yo’ hashtag onnnn! You put all this work into creating a bomb feed so you want to make sure people see it! We recommend doing some research to find the best hashtags to fit your brand. This can include random searches on Instagram to see what is the most popular or even looking at other brands you admire to see if they use any that fit. For example, one of our favorite hashtags to use is #flashesofdelight which is from @glitterguide

While you work on creating your brand personality, make sure you keep note of what seems to be working best for you brand. Which posts are your audience responding and engaging with the most? Which hashtags seem to help you reach a greater audience. This way to you tailor your content more strategically moving forward!

Social media is a littleeee more than just posting on your accounts here and there. As much as we’d love to think that posting is enough, that’s not the best way to use social media to your brand’s advantage. Throughout our experience working in social media, we’ve noticed a few common mistakes some brands make that are easily avoidable (trust, we’ve probably make one or two of these ourselves!). So we’ve put together a few key points to avoid (or fix) that will help give your social media a little boost!

Your Profile Isn’t Complete

This means you have no bio/description or website visible (gasp!). You want to make sure you have as much information as possible filled out on each social media account. Not only will this help provide a little snapshot of your business, but it also helps make your business look credible and trustworthy. You want to make it as easy as possible for people to first, know what your biz is all about and second, get more information on your brand (and maybe even purchase your product or services!) if they are interested.

You also want to have clear CTAs directing your followers to your website to get more information, sign up for your newsletter, or whatever else you’d like them to do! You’ll want to include these CTAs in both your bio/description as well as in your posts!

Inconsistent Posting

This is veryyy common. Having an inconsistent posting schedule can actually do more harm than you'd think and it's actually pretty easy to fix! Whether you decide to post daily or just 3 times a week, we recommend sticking to the same schedule week after week. To make life a little easier, plan your posts in advance. Not Being Social

Social media is all about being social! Along with posting consistently on your accounts, you want to make sure you also take time to network and interact with your followers. Dedicate time each day to follow relevant users as well as like and comment on other posts.

Make sure you’re genuine in your interactions though! Users can tell if you automate this process and this will actually do more harm to your brand than good!

Not Using the Right Hashtags

Hashtags are a great tool to help grow your social media accounts so you want to make sure you use them right! Taking the time to research the right hashtags for your industry will not only help make your posts more visible to an engaged audience but will also help you connect with others in your industry and even followers searching for your product or service.

Inconsistent Visuals

Along with inconsistent posting, this might be the most common mistakes social media users make. Social media is probably one of the quickest snapshots (other than your website) a follower can get of your brand so you want to make sure it is a cohesive representation of your brand. Taking the time to plan how your feed will look is worth every second of the time it takes you. Do you have a theme you follow? Colors? Tones? We love our COLOR so we make sure this is portrayed throughout our brand and especially on social media!

While these might seem like small missteps, they can definitely add up and weaken your social media strategy. Luckily, these mistakes are all easy to fix and implement to get your social media on the right track!

As you know, Instagram has been making quite a bit of changes over the last few years. Remember when Facebook purchased the app, or when they added ads? And who can forget all of the hoopla over the new algorithm?! Well, they weren't done making headlines yet and this time, it's with a new feature. Meet Instagram Stories. Instagram Stories allow you to share photos and videos of your experiences with your followers in a more spontaneous manner. And don't worry, they won't interrupt your perfectly curated Instagram grid. They only appear in the top bar of the newsfeed and will only stick around for 24 hours.

Now wait a second.. do these features sound familiar? Well, that's because the features are veryyyy similar to another well-loved platform -- Snapchat, and for good reason. Even the CEO of Instagram admitted they deserved credit for the idea. So onto what you really care about.. what does all of this mean? Is Snapchat dead? Is Instagram morphing into Snapchat? Do you need to plan even MORE content? That's why we're here, so let's get down to the nitty-gritty of some of the key things you'll want to consider when it comes to Instagram Stories.

Is Snapchat Dead?

Every time a big change rolls around, there's always a lot of buzz about it killing off another platform. And, while it may affect user behavior initially, there are currently over 150 million daily users on Snapchat that aren't going to disappear into thin air. This change is all about Instagram trying to expand its reach and tap into Snapchat's ever-growing audience. While Instagram has over 300 million daily users, double that of Snapchat, Snapchat is crushing it in the tween and teenager category and Instagram wants a piece of the puzzle. Not only that, but Snapchat has been KILLING it in platform growth. The 4-year old app has already surpassed other social media giant, Twitter's daily users and isn't slowing down.  

So while Instagram may be working on its services to appeal to a wider audience, by no means is Snapchat dead. Even with similar features, Snapchat has capitalized on its filters, live stories, and simple interface and we definitely don't see it disappearing anytime soon. Here's a great comparison... Remember when Google+ launched and people thought it might kill Facebook? Well, it turned out that while a lot of people tested it out as it launched its features didn't captivate a long-term mainstream audience. In the same way, Instagram may have a new feature that may be a success.. or fizzle out but Snapchat is here to stay.

Social Media Trend of Real-Time (or close to it) Updates

If there can be one thing said from Instagram's new launch, it's that social media platforms have all tapped into the trend of sharing real-time (or close to real-time updates). Periscope may have been one of the first apps to take live-streaming mainstream but with the rise of Snapchat and Facebook Live, one thing is certain -- social media platforms are pushing the socially connected generation. While planning is certainly involved in many cases, there is a push for content to be created in real-time or on the fly, which is a little bit of a shift than where it has been in recent years. 

Instead of being afraid of the changes.. embrace them! Have a larger audience on Instagram than Snapchat? Then this update is perfect for you! Take advantage of the feature to reach your fans in a new way! Don't feel like you have to pick Instagram or Snapchat though because both have their own strengths. At the end of the day, creating quality content will always be important when it comes to your strategy. It's just about making adjustments along the way and how that content is created.

Integrating Instagram Stories into your Social Media Strategy

So now that we've acknowledged we don't think Snapchat is going anywhere and creating content on the fly is the new trend, let's actually chat creating content. We know how hard you already work at creating content for Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Snapchat, and others, so is it time to also start focusing on Instagram Stories content? We get it.. it's a lot! Here's our two cents.. Stick to your current strategy and find creative and different ways to share bits of content across all your platforms. Kind of similar in that you may share different content on your other platforms depending on your audience.. same with this! Maybe use Instagram Stories to expand upon the content you're already sharing and on Snapchat you might share a series of your daily adventures. As with all pieces of your social strategy it's all about testing the waters and catering to your audience for each platform.

So let's chat about some of the types of content you might want to share on Instagram Stories. Of course this will vary based upon the type of business/blog/services you provide but here's a few suggestions to get started!

  • Behind-the-scenes at your business: Instagram is often the platform where we show the best views of our lives and businesses. The land of pretty photos and nailing perfect flatlays and you know what that's okay! But Instagram Stories allows us to show different parts of our businesses including (if you dare and we do!) the less perfect sides! Share the behind the scenes of creating your products or your design process.. or what it realllyyyy took to get that perfect flatlay. How about sharing a sneak peek at your office or getting to know some of your team members? Instagram Stories is perfect for going a little off the grid and sharing aspects of your business that might not show up on your account otherwise.
  • Share your latest blog post: Whether you are a style blogger or blogging for your business, Instagram Stories is a great spot to connect with your audience and let them know about a new post. Share a sneak peek at your outfit in the post or a prelude to what your post is about. Get creative!
  • Sneak Peeks and announcements: Launching a new product or service soon? Why not give your followers a little peek through Instagram Stories? Whether it's showing some behind-the-scenes of making that new product happen or actually showcasing prototypes this could be a fun way to unveil. Another option is sharing an announcement or a big sale where you could then direct people to your website or blog to find out more info.   • Get follower feedback: Looking for some feedback from your audience? Ask on Instagram Stories! Whether it's picking out an outfit or color of a product, posting a photo or video asking for your audience's feedback encourages engagement.
