I am a military marketing and social media consultant.  I teach military spouse and veteran business owners, usually with military-focused businesses, how to use social media, marketing, PR, and networking to reach their business goals.

I grew up near a military community and most of my friends were either in the military or military girlfriends. I fell in love with the passion, support, and closeness of this community in college, as I lived on a dorm floor with a lot of ROTC students and then in one of the ROTC houses. I was unable to enlist for medical reasons, so I dedicated my career to helping the community I love. I soon got a job as an Army photojournalist and, as a civilian, lived in the barracks on an installation and participated in some of their training activities. I got an inside peek at the life and have used my career in military marketing and civilian entrepreneurship experience to support others looking to follow their business passions.

We're all about bold boss moments, tell us about one of yours!:

I started my first venture at 19-years old.  I began as a photographer and thanks to entrepreneurship, it was able to help fund my college education.  My success as a photographer eventually led to me consulting for other business owners to help grow their businesses.  After I graduated college, I took a job as a photojournalist for the military as an intern.  My experience specializing in the military sector as a civilian, combined with consulting and entrepreneurship as my background, helped skyrocket my passion to both a full-time career and a side hustle. I am now living the dream!

Before I broke out on my own, the startup I was working for realized quite suddenly that they couldn't pay me anymore. They were in development mode so all of their investment money was going toward creating a product; not marketing it. I found myself staring at my laptop at my kitchen table and talking to friends. I started a blog (a dream of mine) and soon got my first client through a referral from a friend. Then, I got another one because someone found my website. And so I grew. And grew. And grew. Today, 5 years later, I've transformed my freelance content marketing business into a digital marketing agency for local businesses and have a team of contractors that I regularly collaborate with to bring stellar results to my clients. I do this while working as a mom to a beautiful 15-month old boy and I have another boy on the way. You can say I have my hands full with a lot of passion projects both in my professional and personal life.

My proudest achievement are my sons and I use them as the inspiration to continue running my business. I want to set an example that hard work pays off – even if they're too young to appreciate that yet.

Professionally, I'm proudest of the fact that I was a finalist for the BBB of Southern Arizona 2017 Torch Awards because it shows that my business operates in a compassionate, ethical manner.

I've achieved many strong results for my clients as well. Every time I hear a success story from one of them, I beam with excitement. That's why I do what I do – to give these local business owners the success they deserve!

What advice or words of encouragement do you have for the Bold Boss Tribe?:

It's not always easy being a boss. There will be days you face imposter syndrome fears. There will be days clients aren't happy. There will be days you feel overwhelmed with the juggle of life and business. But then, there will be those days when your clients write to you with gratitude and tell you how you've transformed their world. Hold onto those moments to get you through the rough times. You're doing great work and the world deserves to hear from you! Keep it up, even when doubt creeps into your mind at 3 a.m.

Tell us your bold boss story!:

Hi! In 2012, I graduated from law school and practiced corporate law in large law firms for 5 years. In doing so, I helped so many businesses and business owners start or grow their own business. Being super passionate about wellness and food, I decided to leave the law in 2016 to start my own health coaching practice, Hygge Wellness. I connected and worked with so many women whose journeys were similar to mine -- they were stressed, burnt out, and needed help learning how to prioritize their own self-care. I absolutely love working with women in this way! But then something unexpected happened...

I heard from women all over the country who were also passionate about starting their own business (of so many varieties!) who wanted to connect with me because of my background as an attorney. I started helping them learn how they, too, could follow their passion and start their own business 1 step at a time. I also saw that there's a real need for simple, affordable DIY legal documents and resources for women who want to start or grow their own business. Like them, I was frustrated that I couldn't find any resources online that understood what it was like to be an online entrepreneur or business owner. So in 2017, I started Sam Vander Wielen LLC -- offering coaches, entrepreneurs, and creatives easy, accessible DIY legal templates and business resources. I want women to feel secure so they can create content from the heart (you know, the type of content that actually helps people and sells, too!).

We're all about bold boss moments, tell us about one of yours!:

I love that I get to play a tiny part in so many women's businesses doing what I do now. I have clients who run courses or programs online, work 1-on-1 through coaching, or who run huge blogs. They can feel comforted in the fact that I'm not only a former attorney, but I'm also an online business owner myself. I get it. I've been in their shoes! So I'm super proud when I see their program launch, or that their 1-on-1 coaching programs are sold out and on waiting lists. As a former attorney who was chained to my desk with no creative abilities, I'm also super proud of my new website. I did it myself and I love it. I think it's really cool to show yourself that you can do anything you want, as long as you have the passion and drive to achieve it. I also think designing your site is a great, underestimated business planning tool.

What advice or words of encouragement do you have for the Bold Boss Tribe?:

Be authentic. Be helpful. Have purpose & passion behind everything you do. I don't have to try very hard to be myself. I just remind myself (and my clients) to be true to who I am. I'm not like every other entrepreneur out there and I love that. I'm me, and I want to help anyone who connects with my message. I also try to be as helpful as absolutely possible. Customer service is key in business. I like to drop my clients some unexpected surprises in the mail, answer any of their questions that I can legally answer, and be there to support and share their businesses as much as possible!
