Tell us your bold boss story!:

My path to art was not traditional. I earned both a Masters and a Doctorate in a Biological Psychology field from UCONN. For the last 18 years, I was at home, educating my 6 children. While teaching them art, I taught myself. We integrated art into all aspects of learning. It was fun!I believe strongly in the healing power of art. Art played a huge role for my family in coping with issues around my son's autism. Now it's time for me to pursue my passion as a career. I'm so happy to be a Certified Grumbacher Art instructor. I also do pet portraits.

I got to meet one of my she-roes, famed colored pencil artist Ann Kullberg, when she came to an art show in Tacoma. I walked right up to her and called her by her first name, and asked her to take a picture with me. We chatted and exchanged emails. I ended up doing some freelance work for her! . I was a project manager for one of her many art books, in which I got to contact artists from all over the world to be included in her book. I also wrote two articles for her COLOR Magazine (November and December 2015) on the healing power of art.

What advice or words of encouragement do you have for the Going Bold community?:

I always thought either you had confidence or you didn't; not that it is a learnable skill which includes pushing through your fear. I saw this quote from Gayle King who interviewed a 13 year old Youtuber in an Oprah Magazine "Confidence is a choice....a big part of being confident is being brave, and you can't be brave unless you're scared".

Tell us your bold boss story!:

Hello! I’m an artist and illustrator in Denver, Colorado. I am obsessed with coffee, interior design, vintage jewelry and fashion books. My happy place is at home in my studio with a jumbo mug, sketching, editing, creating products for my Etsy shop, and trying in vain to keep the cat off the keyboard.

After college I worked as a graphic designer in the corporate world, but found it a bit restrictive, as I couldn’t be as creative as I wanted to be.  I was always painting and sketching in my spare time, so I decided to make the transition from design to illustration. I've had the opportunity to work with private clients and businesses to create custom illustrations for blogs, social media, bespoke portraits and branding materials.

I recently decided to make the leap to working freelance full time, focusing on fashion illustration and building my own brand of illustrated prints, mugs, phone cases, and pillows.  At the moment I’m working on a line of greeting cards, including a holiday collection, soon to hit my shop.

A couple years ago I was asked to illustrate a children's book, which I'd never done before and was definitely challenged by. It took a year and a half and a lot of trial and error, but I finally did it and now it's out there in the world. It was gratifying to get a hard copy of the book, with "illustrated by" me on the cover. I don't know if I'll ever do anything like that again, but I learned a lot by taking the leap and stepping out of my comfort zone, and I'm glad I did it.

Another cool thing was being re-grammed by Saks Fifth Avenue. That happened soon after I started an Instagram account, and I realized how far-reaching a platform it is. So many people saw my work from just that one post! It was an exciting moment.

What advice or words of encouragement do you have for the Going Bold community?:

Don’t expect everyone to understand. There will always be those who assume it’s just a hobby, or ask when you’re going to get a real job. Don’t let that throw you off. Just stay on your path and keep learning and improving. Also, reach out to others in the same field for support. It can get lonely going it alone, especially if you’re an introvert like me. I’ve found a great network of fellow illustrators on Instagram. Seek out people who understand your entrepreneurial bent and fully support it.

Tell us your bold boss story!:

Hello! My name is Melo Hogan. I am a local Realtor in Tacoma, WA helping my clients with their real estate needs since 2011. Real Estate brokers are independent contractors and hang their licenses with their chosen brokerage. I hang mine with Windermere Abode, a boutique real estate company located in Old Town Tacoma.

I started the real estate business with my husband, Steve. I love working next to my husband and we made a great team! But 6 years later, he got a job opportunity that would work better for our family and this change made me reflect whether I should continue on make a career out of real estate. I continued on and missed having the teamwork I used to have but surprisingly, I also started to love working on my own and helping my clients on their real estate journey. I found pride in being able to work independently and pride in my work and the relationships that I have built with my clients. For the first day of 2019, I joined Windermere and plan to take my business to a whole new level!

Aside from my 3 children, ( they are my ongoing accomplishments!) I feel accomplished when I am serving my community. My family and I volunteer 2-3 times a week at our local food bank; we pick up donations from local grocery stores and deliver them to the center for our clients to receive free healthy food! We also make sandwiches at the center and hand them out to our friends at the Tacoma Rescue Mission. One of the latest bold boss moment that I am so proud of is getting a group of women in business called Tacoma Boss Ladies! We meet each month, decompress, talk and learn about one another our our businesses and ask where we can provide support with each other whether in our life or work.

What advice or words of encouragement do you have for the Going Bold community?:

Love what you do - it is hard to do something you don't love. Having the mindset of loving what you do truly helps and everything else will fall into place.

Don't be too hard on yourself - I am guilty of this. I tend to be hard on myself but when everyone else is a critic, why add on to it? While it's always good to being kind to others, more importantly be kind to yourself.

Give back and pay it forward - Do good and good will come to you.
