If you’ve been keeping up with our blog for the last year or so, you know we originally built our biz solely using social media. After working in social media for the past 7+ years each and helping other people grown their businesses through social media, this was a no-brainer for us and really exciting to do for ourselves. While we know how much our strategies have been able to help others, even we were surprised when we broke down our yearly metrics by how much our efforts influenced our business.

During 2016, about 58% of our website traffic came from social media (and that's not even including all the direct clicks from Instagram!) with the following breakdown of that social media referral percentage being:

  • Pinterest 30%

  • Facebook 8%

  • StumbleUpon 6%

  • Instagram 2%

  • Twitter .5%

  • Other 11.5%

While it’s clear Pinterest drives the highest traffic to our website, we also know Instagram provides a much higher percentage than what our analytics show (because clicks on Instagram links in your bio were previously recorded as direct traffic). Plus, we know after we post on Instagram, our web traffic hits a spike. Regardless on the influx from that referral traffic though, 58% is a  pretty killer number. I mean guys, that's more than half of our web traffic which is pretty great for our metrics but we should also note that it's much higher than the industry average of 31.24% of social media referral traffic. Can we get a high-five for that?! 🙏🏻

While we may have already nearly doubled the industry average, we're not done yet and have some lofty goals up our sleeves to keep up the momentum for 2017. Plus, more exciting than crushing web traffic goals is serving YOU! Our readers, community, and overall badass biz bosses. So in the spirit of the New Year, we’re sharing how we used social media to sky-rocket our referral traffic and what tactics we're taking this year to keep up the momentum and hit our goals and that (we hope) you'll love too! So let's get down to biz on breaking down the different types of content we shared on social media this year and what we're trying this year!


Not only does our blog allow us to share our experience and knowledge but it also provides fresh content for us to share to help drive traffic to our website. We post all of our blog posts on social media and even recycle posts when appropriate. One of our most popular pieces of content viewed on our site this year was actually one of our blog posts that went viral on Pinterest and had over 11.6k+ views! Whoop, whoop! So you better believe we’ll be pinning our blog posts like mad women in 2017!

Because of this, we’ve decided that instead of posting a blog once a week we will now be posting twice a week in 2017! Because 1.) we have a lot to share with you and 2.) you guys seem to really enjoy our content! 


This is something we really love doing (hello cute designs!) but admittedly it’s one of those things that gets put on the backburner when biz gets a little hectic. When we have new freebies available, we post about them on social media and send out a little newsletter to our email list to keep everyone updated, but our schedule for them has always been a little wishy washy. We know our followers love our freebies from our web traffic though (and we also read all the sweet messages about how much you love our freebies! Thank you!) So in 2017 we're locking down a schedule and are working on planning them out much more in advance so they don’t get put on that backburner anymore and we can give you exactly what you need to rock your biz!

Content Upgrades

Another one of our main goals for 2017 is to grow our email list. We plan on doing this in several ways but one of the main things that helped us grow our list in 2016 was through various content upgrades. While our freebies are usually fun printables that are not password protected, we've tried creating content with a little more strategy and umph for our content upgrades! A little bit of both worlds is what we're going for. We have a lot of room to grow from our efforts in 2016 and this will be a big focus for us in the New Year. We plan on sharing when we have new content upgrades available on social media (like we do with our freebies!) to help get the word out and provide some useful free tools to our fellow biz owners!

Social Media Schedule 

Along with posting these different types of content, we’re also planning on upping our Instagram posts to 2 a day a few times a week. We consistently notice a jump in our website traffic after we post on Instagram so we’re going to test posting more to see if that helps increase our traffic as well.

While we share all of these different types of content on each of our social media and in our email newsletters, we plan on continuing to utilize Instagram the most and upping our Pinterest game! The funny part about our Pinterest strategy for 2016 is it was one of our LEAST utilized platforms, yet it yielded the most web referrals for us. So you can definitely bet that we'll be upping our game on that platform this year. Anna has already taken the reins on Pinterest since December and we’ve already seen a huge increase in our web traffic in the last month so I can’t wait to see where it takes us in 2017 along with all our other marketing efforts!

While this isn’t the end-all be-all of our list, these are just some of the main pieces (along with our client projects!) that we’ll be focused on to help increase our own website traffic, email list, and social media accounts throughout 2017 and we can’t wait to report back on which of these techniques helps us grow our biz!

As we wrap up the last week of the year we're spending some time relaxing, reflecting and recharging for the New Year! This year was such a year of growth for us both personally and professionally and we CANNOT wait to see what 2017 will bring! Because girllll, do we have some serious goals we're looking forward to achieving!

Before we totally bid farewell to this year though, we wanted to look back at some of our favorite projects of the year! It was toughie because holy moly have we been lucky to work with such incredible clients, but we narrowed it down to a few just for this blog post.

Modern Gem Design Website Design

We had so much fun designing Modern Gem Design's website! Founded by the seriously talented Megan McDowell, Modern Gem Design is a nationwide design services firm that specializes in multifamily properties. Your apartment that was recently renovated and has some really awesome amenities now?! Megan is one of the people who helps make those decisions so that you can LOVE where you live. We had so much fun on this project because we got to combine our design skills (from different industries), and we're also hugeee suckers for amazing interior design.

Fit Foundation Branding + Website Design

Talk about inspiring and motivational, our client Kacia Fitzgerald is killing it with her biz at Fit Foundation! We helped capture Kacia's fun and cheerful personality in her brand new logo and website designs! This website was so much fun to create because it was very bright and colorful and through working on this project Kacia and her equally awesome boyfriend Seena, officially became some of our favorite people ever. Total bonus, the website design was also nominated for Square Studio's Website of the Month Award! Woop, woop!

Action for Healthy Kids Social Media Campaign

Working with non-profits has always been a passion of ours, so it was an honor to work with Action for Healthy Kids this year. The organization is dedicated to mobilizing school professionals, families and communities to take actions for healthy and active lifestyles for kids which is so important and it was an honor to work on their accounts. We helped expand their reach on social media and also led their strategy for their annual Every Kid Healthy Week which received over 2.6 million+ organic impressions on Facebook and Twitter in that week alone!

SheBOOM Graphic Design

We are sincerely passionate about working with other women entrepreneurs and business owners so we jumped at the chance to work with sheBOOM -- a website dedicated to just that! We joined the project and led the creative on a number of projects including the website masthead, website and social graphics, business cards, and newsletter templates. It was SUCH an exciting project to help launch and we're so excited about being on the team as the community rapidly grows!

Systems Saved Me Logo Design

When systems extraordinaire Jordan from Personalized Procedures was launching her podcast, Systems Saved Me she was looking for a logo to represent the project and we were right there to help! Jordan has impeccable style and we were so excited to work with her on a neon sign styled logo that was both fun and high style but also approachable. Systems are so important to running a successful business and we learned so much (and cool new programs) just while working with Jordan on this project! Girl knows her stuff and we're so pumped up about her podcast and biz!

Album for a Cure Branding and Website Update

We're so lucky to have gotten to work with Daniel Nickels several times over the last year! Originally designing his branding and website, we've since gotten to work with him on various other projects including his Album for a Cure campaign. Leading up to the launch of his first solo album, Daniel partnered up with Duke Cancer Institute and donated the sales from his album to cancer research for the month of October. We were thrilled to help him design the campaign logo, adjust his website and provide the logo designs for his t-shirts.

The New Year is the perfect time to start thinking about your website! Is it as user-friendly as you’d like? Is it time for a refresh? Although web design trends often last several years, it is also quickly evolving along with other digital marketing trends which means there is always something to update to ensure your business is at the top of its game! So we’re taking a look at some of the top web design trends to be on the lookout for in 2016.

Vertical User Flow

With mobile traffic continuing to increase and expected to possibly equal desktop traffic this year, you will find more websites designed with a vertical flow allowing users to easily scroll through a site on their phone or tablet. This feels natural for users and can be easier than clicking through navigation.

Flat Design

Flat design will continue to be a major design aesthetic as we head into 2016. Logos, icons, images and other elements of a brand and website will all continue to get flatter in order to continue to get sites to load faster and get content to viewers more effectively.

Subtle Animation

With web design flattening out, designers are looking for ways to make sites stand out. Animation is one of those ways to keep users engaged while they visit your site. Animation will continue to grow in popularity but will likely decrease in size being more subtle on sites. Each animation will serve a purpose and allow the user to know that the site is still working in a fun and clever way.


Big and bold typefaces will continue to be popular since they work so well with other web design elements. One of the top typography trends for 2016 is to pair a simple, readable typeface and a fun novelty option. 

Bolder, Brighter Color

This might be our favorite web design trend for 2016 (if you couldn’t guess already!). With the emergence of flat designs, bright and bold colors have continued to gain popularity. The usage has shifted from more monotone bold colors in 2015 to brighter color palettes with an almost ‘80s vibe to them.

It is easy to already see these trends taking shape in the New Year and we’re really excited to see how they evolve and how sites incorporate them into their designs. If you’re ready to refresh your website this year, we have a little something you might like on our last blog post!
