Chances are you’ve already heard the news… Your Instagram feed will no longer be chronological. (Insert sad face here.) According to Instagram, you miss on average 70 percent of your feed. With the new algorithm, the photos in your feed will now be based on the likelihood you will be interested in them, your relationship with the person posting, and the timeliness of the post. (Yes, just like Facebook!)
If you’re like us, your initial reaction was NOOO! PLEASE NOOO! But now that we’ve had a little time to digest this news, it’s time to put our girlboss hats on and get ahead of the game. Since we still have a few months until the new algorithm will take effect, we think it’s the perfect time to prep your account so you’re ready for the big change!
The same principles to building and managing your Instagram still apply so let’s focus on making all our Instagram accounts bomb digs now so we’re that top photo on the feed every. Single. Time.
Just because things may be changing, that doesn’t mean you should stop creating strong, engaging content that your target audience wants. This is the foundation of your success and should continue to be a main focus.
Spend some time identifying several different types of categories you typically post about. For example, we will post tips, blog posts, client sneak peeks, freebie Fridays, and color posts to name a few. This will help you organize your posts by planning ahead as well as keeping your account cohesive.
Take the next few months to ensure your account is cohesive. This is a snapshot of your brand so you want to make sure it is saying exactly what you want it to say. Do you utilize a similar color palette? Is your lighting similar in each post? This will paint a cohesive picture of your brand so you want to make sure you get this RIGHT.
Pro tip: Props are an easy and fun way to help keep your photos cohesive.
While your pictures are what captures your audience’s attention, your caption is what provides value. Check out our tips on how to write the perfect Instagram caption.
Focus on Growing an Engaged Community
Now let’s talk about the bread and butter of Instagram (and all social media): Community and engagement! It’s not enough to just post awesome content. You need to actively build an engaged community and you do this by engaging with others. Take the time now to like, comment, and follow your target audience to build your community.
Not sure where to find your target audience? Hashtags are key! Not only should use relevant hashtags (check out some of our favs here!) on your posts but searching those hashtags and engaging with those people is where you’ll really form a strong community and connection.
Analyze and Adjust
Not exactly the fun part of Instagram but analyzing what is working, what’s not working, and adjusting accordingly is essential to success. If you’re not doing this, how do you know if your efforts are working?
Using a program like Iconosquare or Squarelovin will provide important data you can use to analyze how your account is performing. We suggest checking these analytics at least every week so you can strategically post according to YOUR audience and adjust anything if needed.
Learning how to analyze and adjust accordingly now will help set you up for success even with Instagram's new algorithm!
Ok everyone, it’s now time to take a deep breath and embrace this change… (we know, we’re struggling a little still too). As more information rolls out, we'll keep you in the loop on what you can do to keep those posts at the top of the feed.
We got yo’ back ladies!
