Alright, I’m about to get real with you guys for a minute. We don't often talk about how our confidence affects us as business owners but this is a seriously important piece to our success... and our sanity. I don't have to tell you that life as a business owner is a constant series of ups and downs that can easily cause us to crumble under stressful situations if we're not continuously building our confidence. In the last few years, I’ve realized I hadn't been nurturing that area of my life like I should have so I’m here today to share how I got my mojo flowing again and how it’s affected my life as a biz owner!
Remove negativity from your life
Whether it is friends and family or a negative self-talk, negativity can have a huge impact on our confidence. If you or someone else is telling you that you can't do something or that your ideas or dreams are silly, then you'll start believing it. And if you don't believe in yourself, how is your business ever going to succeed? You have it in you but you need to believe you do!
While it's not always easy to remove negativity from your life if it's with friends and family, setting boundaries with them can work too. No business talk can be a solution if they are a positive influence on other areas of your life. However, if they are putting you and your ideas down, you need to evaluate whether or not you want that in your life. (And if you have to limit your time with them or remove these people from your life, you do not need to feel guilty. It is your life and you should be surrounded by people that support you and fuel your dreams!)
When it comes to negative self-talk, this is something else entirely and very difficult to turn into positive self-talk! One of my favorite things to do in the morning is to remind myself of a few things I'm truly grateful for and say something nice to myself (No joke, I once told myself that I was "the bomb digs" during a yoga session). This may seem simple and a little silly but it honestly does work if you do it on a daily basis!
Another great way to remove negativity is to focus on how you'll do this each month. I have this amazing planner that I’m obsessed with that has a spreadsheet for each month where you give yourself a word of the month and set goals, etc. But the best part is the section where you write down what negativity/distractions you are going to say no to this month.
This has a lot to do with adjusting your mindset to focus on the positive. It takes some time to start doing this naturally but having a daily/weekly/monthly practice helps keep me on track and reminds me what I want to focus on. Bringing that power right back to YOU!
Keep track of your successes
If I were to ask you right now the 3 biggest things that have happened to you this month, could you name them? What about the 3 worst things that have happened? Often times we focus a lot on the difficult times as business owners rather than the easy, exciting times but if you wrote down every single win you had and went back to read them, I can guarantee that you'd be shocked with how many more exciting moments you've had than difficult!
This is something Anna and I have done since we first started Bold & Pop. We record our milestones so when we're having a bad day, we can go back and see all the amazing things we've accomplished. It's an instant confidence and mood booster and helps set us on the right path again.
I don't care if it's as simple as sending out one new business pitch or as big as signing your biggest contract yet! It's really easy to forget all the progress you've made when you're having a bad day but going back and seeing it can help put it all in perspective giving you the confidence you need to keep moving forward!
Do something that scares the crap out of you
After I lost my job, I decided to take a solo trip to Sedona, AZ. While I've traveled alone before, I was always going to see someone so once I landed I had someone with me. This time I would be navigating from the airport in Phoenix to Sedona alone. I would be deciding all the adventures I would take. And the one thing that scared me the most, I would be eating all alone in a restaurant (gasp!).
While I was ridiculously nervous, I was also so excited to call all the shots and do something for myself. After the first night eating alone, I realized it wasn't so bad. I met so many new people I probably wouldn't have if I were traveling with someone else. And I seriously loved every single second of my trip (I actually almost decided to move to AZ instead of NC because of this trip).
I get that not everyone can take a trip like this but doing something else that scares the crap out of you will do the trick. The rush of pride you get from overcoming something that you are completely terrified to do doesn't compare to anything else! So get out there and do it! (But if you're traveling solo make sure you are safe and smart... my mom made me say that! Hi mom!)
I have never felt more empowered in my life than after my trip to Sedona and I think it is what really kicked my confidence into high gear. And when you're about to venture into the world of self-employment, that’s exactly what you need!
Push yourself to learn something new
This is something I truly believe you should do on a regular basis. Not only does it help you develop new skills and meet new people but it provides you with a sense of accomplishment when you learn something for the first time.
I previously shared my story of how rock climbing has seriously pushed me out of my comfort zone… Every week I try a new problem and when I finally conquer that problem, it’s a rush of confidence and pride!
While rock climbing may not be your thing, there are plenty of activities or skills you can learn. This might be something new to try just once or it could become your passion (which I recommend to keep trying until you find your passion… talk about finding your mojo!) And even if you try it just once and realize it's not for you, be proud that you gave it a shot! Be proud that you realized that wasn't for you and then move on to the next thing you want to learn!
I'm a huge believer in constantly working towards making yourself the best version of yourself that you can be so continuing to invest in building your confidence will have an amazing impact on both your life and your business! By focusing on yourself and building your confidence, you'll soon realize that this is your life and your dream to go after and others' opinions will have a much smaller impact on you. This confidence will help you when pitching investors, finding new clients/customers, pricing your services/goods… I mean the possibilities are endless and I’m sure I don’t have to go on and on about how important all of that is!
