Tell us your bold boss story!

I never wanted to be a business owner. A business woman, yes. But a business owner, no. But once I got the entrepreneurship bug, I couldn’t get enough. I’m now on my third business with Bold & Pop.

While I’ve been the owner of two other businesses since I was in college, I always had a 9-to-5 as well. Not exactly how I wanted it but a secure income obviously is pretty essential when starting out. (I know all of you know the struggle!)

But last year I found myself in a tough position. It was pretty clear that my job was in jeopardy and while I searched and searched for a new position, I just couldn’t find anything that I actually wanted to do. I didn’t want to move from one position I wasn’t necessarily fulfilled in, professionally or creatively, to another where I felt the same way. So I waited it out.

That didn’t exactly work out in my favor because a little over halfway through the year, my department was downsized for financial purposes and I was let go. (CONFESSION: I usually tell this part as “I left my job” because I always find it a little embarrassing that I was laid off so I’m dropping some #TruthBombs with y’all!) Since I had a few months until my final day with the company I had a little time to figure something out.

I’m not 100% sure how it even happened but luckily Anna and I got talking and Bold & Pop was born! And let me tell you, I have NEVER been more fulfilled in my career. I love being a full-time business owner. I love that I’m able to use both my creativity and my business skills simultaneously. And I’m beyond grateful everyday that I am able to not only work full-time for myself now (and with an AWESOME business partner!) but also work with some seriously amazing bosses on some seriously awesome projects!

We’re all about bold boss moments, tell us about one of yours!

Every. Single. Day. I have a new bold boss moment. But if I can only share one, I’ll say that recently I decided to close down my other business (I already shut one down several years ago) to solely focus on Bold & Pop and to give myself the freedom to hopefully have a more nomadic life. While it was an extremely difficult and bittersweet decision to make, I knew it was the right decision for me.

And let me tell you… I swear the second I decided to make this bold move the universe decided to reward me by opening the floodgates to some seriously amazing projects that I am beyond excited to work on! It could be a coincidence and the result of all the hard work we’ve put in, but I’m also a true believer that sometimes you just need to follow your heart, shake things up and watch all the amazing things that happen!

What advice or words of encouragement do you have for the Bold Boss Tribe?

Be a badass. It takes some serious guts to start a business. I give MAJOR credit to anyone that tries. Anyone that follows their dreams. You don’t know what you’re capable of until you TRY. What’s the worse that could happen? You fail? So what! You tried and chances are you learned something in the process. Take that leap of faith and DO IT. Be a badass.

Tell us your bold boss story!

Have you ever been hit with an idea that you just can’t seem to get off your mind? Something so exciting, with a dash of crazy that you just feel like you have to take a chance on it? That is exactly how my bold boss story began.

I never thought of myself as an entrepreneur.. I’ve always been very ambitious and a go-getter – I graduated college two years early and shortly after graduating hopped on a plane across the country to further my career – but the idea of owning a business just wasn’t on my radar. Something that was though... was the dream of a day where I’d be able to split my time more evenly on the east and west coast (where my family lives). The actual execution of making that a reality was always a little fuzzy... That is until I had the idea for Bold & Pop!

After working at an agency for years I was itching for a change and my latest idea was one I just couldn’t shake. The concept was simple. I wanted to create a collective of freelancers that would offer social media, public relations, branding, web design, and event planning services on a freelance basis. A collective that provided support by working together on projects, but also the freedom without being locked in like a traditional agency. After working in the industry for awhile I had connections with people who specialized in each of these things and also wanted to do something on their own.. so I thought why not bring them all together? While the idea was certainly not revolutionary – there are countless agencies, I had a very specific sense of how I wanted the branding for the business (hellooooo color & fun!) to play out the types of clients I wanted to work with.

So I worked out some of the initial details in my head and introduced the idea to some of my connections one-by-one, and to my surprise no one told me I was crazy -- although at that point I'm not sure I would have listened! It was really after I talked to Mallory though that I was like heck yes we can do this!!! We had worked together for years so we already knew our work styles and personalities meshed well and after the agency we were working at during the time was restructuring our department and staff, we decided the timing was right to take a chance! It was at that point I realized that I hadn’t actually been afraid of the idea of starting a business, I had been afraid of doing it alone. While leaving a secure job with a steady income still terrified the heck out of me -- helloooo living in NYC is not cheap yo! I just knew we were onto something and that we would figure it out.

We’re all about bold boss moments, tell us about one of yours!

Man, there have been SOOO many (and it excites me to say that!) I'll give you 3 big ones!

1.) When Mallory jumped onboard to make Bold & Pop a reality (we didn't even have a name then!) With her help, we were able to take this little idea I have and actually turn it into something fabulous! The branding, the design, the style of our business... none of it would be what it is today without her. You kind of know you're with the right co-founder when you literally finish each other's sentences... yes really! Not only did she bring her own business experience to the project, but our skill sets compliment each other so well and let me be super cheesy for a moment.. it was just meant to be.

2.) My first trip home.. Right after I left my full-time job I went home to visit my family for nearly a month and I felt SOOO boss -- So many happy tears 😭😭 Being able to spend more than a few days at a time with my family gave me all of the feels. I was still working my booty off during the day, but the fact that I could do that anywhere was one of the best feelings and an added kick of motivation to grow the business.

3.) THIS! The idea for the #BoldBossTribe started from a conversation about something completely different and then after chatting with Mallory the idea evolved into featuring other fellow entrepreneurs and business owners. Hands down one of my favorite thing about our business is working with other boss people so launching a platform to feature them just made me SO happy. My heart just lit up with every submission that came through and the stories... ah, it was just such a reminder that everyone's journey is different and there is no straight line to success (P.S. if you haven't caught them all you can do that >> here <<)

What advice or words of encouragement do you have for the Bold Boss Tribe?

My message to the Bold Boss Tribe is.. Sometimes you just need to listen to that little voice when you feel your intuition pushing you in a specific direction. Any kind of change or taking a chance on something is no doubt scary (most life changes are) but man can they be worth it! Work through the details and come up with a plan! In my case, finding the right co-founder was just what I needed to make that step. Teamwork makes the dream work right?! If you have the passion and the drive to make something happen you will find a way. Sure there will be some learning curves along the way, but if you believe in yourself, you too can be one of the success stories!

As we close out the week, we want to send out a HUGE thank you to all of the amazing entrepreneurs who shared their stories this week for the #BoldBossTribeAnd if you want to use any of our fun prints in our pics make sure to download our free printables and share your own stories on social media too.
