Tell us your bold boss story!:
The three of us #boldbosses (Megs, CP, and Q) met in college in 1999 - an easier time without social media pressures and when taking a selfie included elaborate camera timing mechanisms and developing film to see if your head was cut off. We grew into strong women with our own thoughts, ideas, and self-worth. We started to notice a shift in preteen and teen girls with the need for outward approval. Didn't they know they were awesome? Why do you need other people to tell you that you're smart/pretty/amazing/worthy? And we were troubled with how much focus there was on young girls to be perfect. We decided to do something about it! We started Spark, a monthly subscription box geared towards preteen girls ages 9 to 13, to inspire girls to love themselves, just the way they are. Our themes and items are carefully crafted to be fun, useful, and thought-provoking. We include a journal prompt and monthly challenge around the theme. We're relatively new (getting ready to mail our 5th box), but we've heard so much positive feedback about our product!
One of the best things about Spark is that it's given us a new dimension to our already strong friendship. College friends sometimes drift apart after life starts taking off...now we have regular conference calls and constant email chains! It's basically the best thing ever.
We're all about bold boss moments, tell us about one of yours!:
We love reading gift messages for the girls that come through on orders. Moms, dads, aunts, grandparents use this time to really tell their girl to shine in her own special way. We've heard stories of girls who are having trouble in school, and Spark made them feel special during this difficult time. One girl wrote that she "remembered how much I do like myself." How great is that!?!?!
Spark is our side hustle- all 3 of us have additional full-time jobs. Two of us also have kids- one is currently on maternity leave! We are continually proud that we are able to grow our business in the midst of all this awesomeness. It definitely takes work and creatively scheduling (one time we scheduled a live news segment after pulling a nightshift!) but we love it. "Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing ." Amiright? Holler T. Roosevelt!
What advice or words of encouragement do you have for the Bold Boss Tribe?:
We are all about work retreats- our partners live in different cities, so our biggest breakthroughs have come when we spend a weekend holed up in an AirBnB halfway between Indiana and Nebraska! You can get a quarter's worth of work done in 2 days when you remove all the other things that compete for your attention!
Our favorite bold advice is "someday is made up of a thousand tiny nows." Got an idea? Why not now? What's stopping you? Push push push! If you wait until the time is "right," you'll never do it.
