Tell us your bold boss story!:
I fell in love with business in college while working for a direct selling company with my then-best-friend, now-husband-and-partner, Luke. I loved design and had always wanted to be a graphic designer, but one day someone asked me what I wanted to do with my life and I answered, "I want to own my own marketing agency and design for clients." I was shocked by my own answer - I hadn't even realized that was the dream in my heart!
A year later, Luke and I combined our skills (my graphic and web design skills with his marketing and video talent) to found Blue Ivory Creative. I was still in school at the time but loved what we were doing with our new company so much that I dropped out of college (later finishing my degree online) and moved from my hometown of Columbia, SC to where Luke and our business were located in Nashville, TN. My very traditional parents didn't understand what I was working towards and cut me off both financially and emotionally in many ways. Though we have a great relationship now, that was definitely a struggle that made me really decide that running my business is exactly what I want to do!
Four years later, our company has grown exponentially, we've added people to our team, and I love what I do every single day! I'm working towards creating an excellent lifestyle for my future children, one in which I can be present for their important life moments.
We're all about bold boss moments, tell us about one of yours!:
One of my most proud moments was definitely speaking at my college graduation. I finished school online at Indiana University while running my business full time. At the end of the year, I was asked to be the first online student graduation speaker, and got the opportunity to travel to Indiana to speak to thousands of other students about how to keep dream stealers from stealing their dreams. It was so amazing to hear professors and the dean commend me for sharing something that students almost never hear while they're in school and was definitely a full circle type of moment for me.
What advice or words of encouragement do you have for the Bold Boss Tribe?:
If you really love what you do and want something, don't be afraid to go after it, no matter what it takes. If what you're doing is right, you'll definitely get some kickback - from other entrepreneurs, from family members - but stay strong in your passion and achieve your dreams! Make sure that you set goals regularly - for the day, week, month, year, five years, etc. - and keep track of the steps that you're taking to work towards those. And surround yourself with people who are living the kind of lifestyle that you want to have; those people will understand what you're working for and will motivate you towards success.
