Tell us your bold boss story!
I quit my job in September to freelance full time, and a couple of months ago decided to start a business around what I do as a freelancer — marketing and SEO for small business owners.
We're all about bold boss moments, tell us about one of yours!
In 2010 I founded a modern vintage market with a business partner of mine. It was our first time producing any sort of event. While we were at the space taking measurements, a vendor came by to assess the space at the same time. When she found out who we were she asked me, "Are you out of your mind?" She said we could never produce an event like we were planning in a space that size. I was terrified that she was right, and also — how do you respond to that?
I basically told her, "Maybe you're right. We might be crazy. But we also might be on to something. You can back out if you want, I'll refund your booth fee. Come to the event and see how we do." She did. The event was attended by 3,000+ people and all 40 of our vintage vendors were so ecstatic, they nearly all sold out of goods. We had to kick shoppers out when the event closed, it was so frenzied. The vendor who had pulled out and been refunded found me during the event to say she had been wrong. She never sold with us but attended every event we did and was always like, "I was wrong about you. You girls are good."
What advice or words of encouragement do you have for the Bold Boss Tribe?
Don't ever let someone tell you you can't do something.
That said, learn to listen to people's advice when it counts. Don't ask someone for their advice and counter with "We've already tried that." People only have so much wisdom to give.
